Investing for Retirement

At Family Week this year Bro. Whetstone emphasized the need to plan for retirement. John O’Malley’s brother David is a financial advisor with Edward Jones, and has helped the Office as well as many of our missionaries with their investments. He produced a short video for our missions family about saving for the future. We trust this will be helpful to you. If you have questions or would like contact information for him or other financial advisors, please contact Kim O’Malley.

Mobile Banking

Mobile banking and mobile deposit are becoming more and more accessible. We have received questions from many of our missionaries in recent months about how to handle funds with regards to mobile deposits. Following are important things for you to know.

    • WWNTBM recommends all checks be payable to the mission office, as it alleviates certain tax reporting requirements both for the church and for the missionary. However, we realize there are times when a donor will write a check payable directly to the missionary.
    • If you receive a check payable to you, it is fine to use Mobile Deposit options to deposit the funds to your bank. Be sure to list the funds as additional income on Line 2 of your financial report, or to track the funds for your own personal tax records. *NOTE: Due to visa restrictions, Non-Resident Alien missionaries should never accept funds in the US payable to them personally. Please contact our office if you have questions about this.
    • If you receive a check payable to WWNTBM, you should never attempt to deposit it to your bank using Mobile Deposit. Doing so could create problems for both you and the donor. Please mail the check(s) to the Office, so we can process the funds and put them into your bank account. If you need the funds immediately, before the check would have time to arrive in the mail, please let us know and we will be happy to advance the funds into your account pending the arrival of the check.
    • When mailing checks to the Office, please be sure to make a note of the donor(s), amounts, check numbers, and dates you mailed the items to us. In the rare event the checks may be lost in the mail, this would be important information so you can contact the donors to ask about a replacement check.

Things to Consider When Mentioning Financial Needs to Donors

You may occasionally have financial needs that are not covered by your regular support funds. It is good for your donors to be aware of the needs of your ministry. However, there are some things that you should think through when mentioning such situations to donors. Because of this, WWNTBM asks that you keep the following information in mind when communicating your needs and contact us prior to seeking designated funds.

When WW receives or receipts funds with a specific designation, we become legally accountable to ensure the funds are used for that specific project. This can create issues, because multiple churches may give more than what is required for one designation, and funds are then not available to be used for another need that may arise. Because of this, our recommendation is that funds always be designated simply “as needed for the missionary,” without any additional designations or specifications attached. Where that is not possible, we recommend the following.

First, if you are asking to raise funds for a specific project, we request that you confirm for us in advance that your sending pastor is aware of and behind the project. In order for WW to issue tax receipts for specially designated funds, the Executive Board has to include it in the official minutes, and they prefer to know that your sending pastor is aware of the situation.

Second, there are many logistical items the Office can assist you with. For instance, it may not be advisable to ask donors to mark a gift as “France Building” because we may already have another missionary raising funds with that designation, and it could create confusion for how we would post the donation. Therefore, it is always best to confer with the Office prior to contacting donors, so that we can help advise on the best way for funds to be designated. In addition to the designation, there may be tax implications to you based on the manner in which funds are designated. We can help ensure the best tax situation for you as funds are received.

Third, we always recommend that donors make checks payable to WW, rather than to the individual missionary. Although we do have the ability to cash checks in your name, this makes for a smoother process and can avoid unnecessary tax paperwork for the church and the missionary. (If a church makes funds payable to you in the amount of $600 or more over the course of the year, they are required to issue a separate 1099 to you, even if the funds came through WW. In addition, if you are not a US citizen, there may be other tax and visa implications for you.)

Finally, we often see situations where designated funds arrive in our office for needs mentioned in passing or in a prayer letter but for which the missionary was not intending to solicit funds. Please be aware that the same procedures for Executive Board approval of designated funds apply regardless of whether you intended to solicit funds or not. Because of this, it is our policy to reach out to you and ensure that it is a legitimate need, and one of which your pastor is aware, before we process the funds. Thank you for your understanding. Opportunity for High School Juniors and Seniors

Ambassador Baptist College has recently started a Dual-enrollment program, allowing high school juniors and seniors to take up to two classes per semester to get a head start on a Bible degree. WWNTBM has partnered with Ambassador Baptist College to lead a missions trip to the Boston, Massachusetts area this summer for young people ages 15-30. We will be assisting the ministry of WW Missionaries Nick and Lindsey Stelzig. This year, we are focusing on a multi-lingual team ministering in both English and Spanish. We realize that many small churches do not have the resources to provide opportunities for their youth to see missions first hand. New Babies!

Samuel Ray Smothers was born on April 16, 2022. He weighed 7 pounds 3 ounces and measured 21 inches. Samual is the son of Joel and Noel Smothers. He joins older brother Gabriel. The Smothers are missionaries in Brazil. The Smothers have recently moved to a new location and will be starting a new ministry in the near future. Please pray for them as they begin this endeavor!

Jaxson Levi Conley was born on April 22. He weighed 8 pounds 9 ounces and measured 20 inches. Jaxson is the first child of Garrett and Katlyn Conley. The Conleys are currently in ministry training with a goal of qualifying for a visa to minister in Ireland.

The Unseen Hand Of God

On February 28, 2022, I preached at a funeral of the family member of a lady that I had not seen in years. I was recommended by another individual who was asked first, but due to some health issues, I could not preach at the funeral. I preached the graveside service and then met more family and friends afterward. It wasn’t until Sunday, April 17, 2022, that I saw her again. She came forward at church and said she had gotten right with God. Praise the Lord.

On April 19, 2022, I was downtown in Greensboro, NC, with two other men. One of those men is a good friend who could not preach at the funeral. Praise the Lord that he is doing better and faithfully helping with the homeless outreach ministry each week.

I have written all that to give a little background for all that took place on April 22 – 23, 2022.

My friend that helps with the homeless outreach ministry asked me about going down to SC to help him, and another man fix a back porch on his sister’s mobile home. Another man had started the porch but had gotten sick and could not finish the job. I told him I would help him. We left about 6:45 on Friday morning, April 22nd. We got to his sister’s a little after 9:00 am and started work. Not long after we got started, I received a text from the lady that I had preached at her family member’s funeral and had just gotten right with God. The text said for me to call her. I called her, and she asked if I could do her a favor. I said yes if I can. She then told me about a cousin in the hospital in Winston Salem, NC, with cancer and was not expected to live. She wanted to know if I could visit him. I explained that I was in SC, and if she sent me his contact information, I would try to see him as soon as I got back to NC. I told her I would be praying.

I got off the phone, and the men and I prayed for this individual. As soon as we prayed, God laid it on my heart to call a Pastor friend in Winston Salem, NC. I called the number that came up on my phone, not knowing that it was the fax number for the church. The secretary was in the office and saw that the fax machine showed a phone call, and my name came up, so she answered. She told me that I called the church fax number and she saw my name and thought that she should answer it. I asked for the Pastor, but she said he was on the phone. I explained to her what was taking place and asked if He could go or knew someone else that could see this man.

I told her I would get her some more information as soon as I got it from the man’s cousin. She said she would tell the Pastor. She gave me the office number, and I hung up. I received the individual’s room number and phone number at the hospital just as I hung up with her. I then called the church back and gave her the information. I then contacted the individual that had contacted me first and let them know that I had contacted a Pastor in Winston Salem.

I didn’t hear anything else until around 12:30 Saturday afternoon, April 23rd. The Pastor from Winston Salem called and told me that the individual had gotten saved. I rejoiced with him. He then began to explain to me what had taken place. His secretary had given him the message that I had called, but something had come up with one of his elderly church members. That something was a backed-up toilet. She called her Pastor because he was a servant, and the elderly lady did not know who else to call. So, he went to this elderly lady’s home to help. But during this time, the Pastor and his wife were also working getting ready for a luncheon for the ladies of the church that was to be held the following day, Saturday, April 23rd. This Pastor had his hands full.

He was not able to make it to the hospital on Friday. But he was determined to go while they had the luncheon at the church on Saturday. And another thing, the Pastor was also leaving town after the luncheon for Ohio for a meeting. A lot was going on, but praise the Lord, the door opened, and he took the time to walk through it.

He made it to the hospital, introduced himself to the patient, and found out that he would not have been able to see the individual if he had come on Friday. The individual was in a procedure and couldn’t have been seen—what a God we serve.

When I called the Pastor on Friday, I didn’t know anything about the individual’s background, other than that he was lost, nor did I know much about the Pastor’s background. I had just felt led to contact this Pastor. Well, God knew exactly why I needed to contact this particular Pastor. When he got to the hospital and met the individual, the patient began telling the Pastor about his Holiness background and how he had just given up on it. He couldn’t live up to the expectations and had gotten discouraged and just walked away from that religion. Well, I know now why God wanted this, Pastor. Any Pastor could have probably helped this individual, but this Pastor was the one God wanted.

The Pastor’s dad was in the Holiness church before he got saved. This Pastor had dealt with his dad about it and was able to lead him to the Lord. So, you see, this Pastor knew exactly where this individual was coming from and could help him, with the Holy Spirit’s help, understand the Gospel and lead him to the Lord.

It is exciting to see how God worked everything out in His timing and according to His plan. From preaching a funeral and then seeing an individual from that graveside service get right with God weeks later. Then to see that same individual get a burden for a loved one, who then calls me, but I am out of town helping someone else, an inconvenience I thought because I wanted to rush over to the hospital to see this individual. But then God opened the door for a Pastor in Winston Salem to get involved. Then to see another inconvenience come up, at least we thought so. But then, to see God in His perfect timing bring everything together and a soul is saved, and another hears the Gospel message as well. What a God! What a Savior!

Don’t give up, no matter what may come into your path. God can take what we might think is an inconvenience and use it for His honor and glory. If we will be sensitive to His leading and follow through with His leading, there is no telling what God can do.

Why not me?

And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:7–9

If you live with an infirmity, you may find yourself saying, “Why me? Why do I have to suffer with this ailment? Why must I go through this trial?”

You may question God. You seek answers from others. You wonder, “What possible good could come from this infirmity?” You may look at others who do not have your infirmity and wonder, “Why do I have to suffer and they do not?”

When Paul spoke of his infirmity, he quantified his infirmity in three ways. He saw it as a thorn in his flesh. He declared it a messenger of Satan. He wrote of it as something which was meant to keep him humble.

Paul knew what he saw in the revelation from God when he was caught up into the third heaven. What he saw was so amazing that it could have gone to his head and made him boastful. God forbade Paul from speaking of what he witnessed.

Paul’s inspired words speak to me. From his words, I learn God’s presence, power, and promises are linked to my infirmities. When Paul spoke of his infirmity, he spoke of glorying in his infirmities. Glorying in our infirmities is not a natural reaction to affliction. Paul saw his affliction as the path for him to have the power of Christ rest upon his life.

The sense of this word rest is that God’s power tabernacles or dwells with us in our infirmity. What a beautiful picture! Like the Shekinah glory shown through the badger skins in the wilderness tabernacle, Paul’s thorn in the flesh teaches me God tabernacles with us in our affliction. He brings His power, presence, and promises as He sets up a tent over my life and dwells with me in my affliction.

If you live with an infirmity, you might say, “Why me?” But, since the power of Christ is known through our infirmities, perhaps we should say, “Why not me?”

Tax Filing Information

The deadline this year to file taxes for most taxpayers is Monday, April 18. If you have not yet contacted your tax preparer about filing your taxes, you need to do so as soon as possible. Failure to file on time, even if you are unable to pay on time, can result in additional penalties and interest. All missionaries with WWNTBM are responsible to file their own taxes. If the office can assist in providing paperwork to your preparer on your behalf, please let us know.

Financial Status Report

We will upload a Financial Status Report to your SecureCloud account in coming days, showing figures for the first quarter of 2022. This is meant to show you the financial details that we have on file, such as your support estimate and the average amount of support you received this past quarter. This is information we provide to pastors who may call about your ministry. We ask that all missionaries update their support estimate once every four years, or as their lives and ministries change. Please review this information and contact us if you have any questions.

New Baby!

We are pleased to announce the birth of William David (Davey) Tolley on March 25. He weighed 9 pounds 7 ounces. Davey is the firstborn son of our staff member, Rebekah Tolley, and her husband Brandon. Davey is also the nephew of our staff member, Laura Cmaylo. Pray for the Tolleys as they adjust to having a new little one in their home!

We Will Continue

When I chose the 2022 Family Fellowship Week theme, I wanted our first annual meeting, following COVID, to publicly drive a stake deep in the ground of our heritage and make it known, We Will Continue.

We Will Continue in the same direction Pastor Wingard charted in 1971. Pastor Wingard and the Executive Board set the course for leadership qualifications, ministry philosophy, and Bible doctrine. We unapologetically will continue this course in the tradition of the “faith which was once delivered unto the saints.”

World Wide New Testament Baptist Missions will not blaze a new philosophical trail; we will walk old paths. None here are trying to find a new Gospel; we will preach the same Gospel. None here are trying to find a new kind of church; we will continue to associate with like faith and order churches. None here are trying to figure out a new Bible; we will stay with the same Bible. We Will Continue.

Please pray for those who attend this conference. We expect over 150 people to attend. Fifteen missionaries and pastors will share their positive and uplifting testimony of a defining moment in their life about continuing. In addition, six men will preach messages on continuing in the Gospel, Prayer, Doctrine, Character, Word of God, Love, and Praise.

Brother Whetstone, Dalton Heath, Mike West, and I will speak in the evening services.

We cannot live-stream these services. However, we arranged for audio and video recordings. When Family Fellowship Week is over, we intend to provide the conference’s audio in its entirety on FamilyFellowshipWeek.com as soon as we can. We will also have segments available on our podcast, Uplift.

Planning for the Future

“Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds. For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation?” – Proverbs 27:23-24

“For the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.” – II Corinthians 12:14

Scripture clearly teaches the principle of planning for the future, and making preparations to care for succeeding generations. Missionaries often focus so much attention on getting to the field and the resources needed for ministry, that they forget about this important area. We daily focus on telling others about the brevity of life. As we encourage others to plan for their eternal future, let us not forget to plan for our earthly future.

Practical steps you can take to ensure peace of mind for your family:

1 – Make a Will
    • You and your spouse should have individual wills, which include instructions if you are survived by your spouse, or if you and your spouse both pass at the same time.
    • Decide who will be your executor.
    • Decide who will care for your children.
    • Decide who will receive your belongings.
    • Decide what items will go to specific individuals (wedding rings, family heirlooms, etc.).
    • Decide on amount(s) to give to charity.
    • Decide who will care for pets.
    • Be sure all names in the will are spelled correctly to avoid delays.
    • Do not sign your wills until you are in the presence of a notary public, and two competent witnesses unrelated to you who are not beneficiaries to the will!
2 – Prepare Other Legal Documents
    • Designate Power of Attorney(s) to handle financial matters.
    • Designate Power of Attorney(s) for health matters.
    • Consider having your spouse as a co-signer on all financial accounts.
    • Consider having your spouse as a co-owner on all vehicles and property.
3 – Obtain Life Insurance
    • Consider funds to cover funeral expenses and possible repatriation of remains.
    • Consider the possibility of moving your family home from the field.
    • Consider any one time expenses you wish to fund, such as paying off any outstanding debt.
    • Consider income to help your family into the future.
4 – Consider Funeral Preparations
    • What can you record that will be helpful to loved ones who will need to make difficult decisions during an emotional time?
    • Where do you wish to be buried?
    • Are there specific verses or songs that are special to you?
    • What are significant dates in your life, including your salvation and call to service?
    • Do you have a preference for a tombstone? 
5 – Create a Legacy Drawer
    • This is a single location to store all important documents.
    • Include a list of all financial accounts, with account numbers, contact information for the financial institutions, and passwords to access online details.
    • Include documents such as Birth Certificates, Social Security Cards, Passports, Wedding License, Deeds, Titles, etc.  If originals are in a safety deposit box, include copies and details of how to locate originals.
    • Include copies of tax documents for prior years, as well as the name and contact information for your tax preparer.
    • Include passwords, combinations, usernames, PINs, etc.  Be sure to include information about your online presence such as social media accounts and personal websites.

6 – Plan for Emergencies
    • Ensure that someone close to you on the field has a way to contact your family, sending pastor, or the mission agency in the event that something happens to both you and your spouse.
    • Keep the contact information for the local Embassy easily accessible.    
    • Review your health insurance coverage on a regular basis: Have you had major life changes? Do you have sufficient coverage for all family members? Do you have policy coverage both in the US and overseas? 
    • Outline an evacuation strategy: How will you pay for it? Where could you go if needed? How could you travel? If you need to evacuate by car, do you know what route(s) to take?

Staff Update

As many of you are aware, Mrs. Rebekah Tolley is expecting a baby within the next few weeks! If all goes as planned, she will be on maternity leave beginning March 14 through the end of April. We are all excitedly anticipating the arrival of Baby Tolley!

During Rebekah’s absence, Mrs. Hannah Brenneman will be monitoring our Signal Messenger communications. You can continue to send financial requests to the main Signal number, 704-750-9493. Our staff will monitor Rebekah’s email and other communications.

After her maternity leave, Rebekah will be working from home four days per week and will spend one day per week in the office. Congratulations may be sent to [email protected].

What do you do when your spirit becomes wounded?

“The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; But a wounded spirit who can bear?” Proverbs 18:14

When you are medically sick, you desire to get better. Your inner man, your spirit, drives you to get well. But what happens when your spirit gets wounded?

When the spirit gets wounded, we call these emotional wounds. Emotional wounds may come from marriage, ministry, acquaintances, and family. In fact, the very people you have given your life’s calling to reach with the Gospel can wound your spirit.

Emotional wounds are not a recent generational phenomenon. Scripture affirms the existence of wounded spirits by asking, “But a wounded spirit who can bear?”

How do you cope when emotionally wounded? How do you process the hurt caused by another? Do you retreat within your fears, brood, or seethe with anger? Do you try to hide because of shame or guilt?

I watch when ministry people become wounded. They use their platform of ministry to attack the one who wounded them on Social Media. I watched others go after the one who wounded them from the pulpit or in the classroom. Yet, others resort to gossip to sow seeds of discord about the one who wounded them.

Jeremiah (8:22) spoke of a wounded person with access to medicine and physicians. He even asked why they were not better when they had access to health.

Jeremiah validated the truth: Israel had a wound. The wound was real; it was not to be denied.

Jeremiah asked if the region of Gilead had run out of its healing balm. He wanted to know if there was still a medicine available.

Jeremiah further inquired, were there still physicians in Gilead? Doctors were available and present to help apply the balm needed for the wound.

Jeremiah asked with a perceptible tone, if they had all the resources, why were they not better yet?

Because of a fear of perceived weakness, you may not readily admit you have a wound. Your children can point to your wound. Your spouse can tell you of your wound. Yet, if you do not readily admit there is a wound, how will you get better?

It is acceptable and permissible to say I have a wound. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps and remember, there is a medicine, the word of God. You will need to force yourself to recall there is a physician, the Holy Spirit of God. You will need to decide. When will I allow myself to heal?

Tell the Lord, this is where they hurt me. Listen for Him to say, “Yes, but this is where I began to heal you.”

New Excel Templates for Financial Reports

New Excel templates for the year 2022 have been emailed to you and posted on SecureCloud in the Forms and Manuals folder. Please begin using the new templates with your January financial reports. NRA Reports for January are due on February 1, and January reports for US Missionaries will be due on March 1.

Financial Status Report

We have uploaded a Financial Status Report to your SecureCloud account, showing figures for the fourth quarter of 2021. This is meant to show you the financial details that we have on file, such as your support estimate and the average amount of support you received this past quarter. This is the information we provide to pastors who may call about your ministry. We ask that all missionaries update their support estimate once every four years, or as their lives and ministries change. Please review this information and contact us if you have any questions.

Benefits of Financial Reports for US Citizens

The Monthly Financial Report (MFR) for US Citizens is the tool that missionaries can use to become accountable to WWNTBM for their reimbursable expenses, rather than having all funds listed as personal earnings. Over the course of 2021, 72% of those eligible chose to submit MFRs. By doing so, they were able to reduce their 1099 Personal Earnings by a combined average of 23.37%. If you are not currently utilizing MFRs and would like information about how to begin, please contact our office.

IRS Information For the 2022 Tax Season

The IRS has issued several notices about this year’s tax season. Due to Covid and the government closing of many IRS offices, millions of 2020 tax returns are still pending processing. In addition, the added procedures regarding the Advanced Child Tax Credits and the Economic Impact Payments (stimulus checks) are expected to cause unique challenges this year. Click here to read important information from the IRS. We encourage all missionaries who are subject to US Taxes to contact your tax preparer and begin the filing process as soon as possible.

The IRS is issuing two separate letters to taxpayers who received either the Advanced Child Tax Credit or the Third Economic Impact Payment in the year 2022. These letters will be marked as the Advance CTC letter 6419 and the Third Economic Impact Payment letter 6475. In addition, taxpayers who filed on time in 2021 but whose refunds were delayed due to Covid may receive a 1099-INT from the IRS for interest earned on the delayed refund. It is important that you keep these letters and provide them to your tax preparer when filing your taxes for 2021. If these letters come to our office for you, we will provide them to you at the time we provide your other tax documentation.

Please Note: The IRS has already issued a warning that some of the 6419 and 6475 letters sent to tax payers may contain errors! Please be sure to verify the information in the letters against your personal records of Advanced Child Tax Credits or Economic Impact Payments received. Consult your tax preparer for advice if you notice any discrepancies.

Preparing and Filing Taxes for US Missionaries

Please note that, while our Office Staff is familiar with many of the IRS regulations that affect missionaries, we are not authorities on the subject. We will attempt to assist our missionaries in any way possible; however, questions which are beyond the scope of your missions status are best directed to a tax professional.

We will provide you with the following information at the end of January.  Please watch for emails in coming days with details on how this will be distributed. 

      • A copy of your 1099 
      • A year-to-date Summary of the MFR information that you have submitted to the Office.  This can be especially helpful if you have completed Categories 17-22, as many of those categories can affect your personal taxes.  This will show your Personal Earnings Calculations for the year, as well as Housing Allowance information and details of Estimate Taxes we may have submitted for you during the year.  There may also be notices on this document specifically for you and your tax preparer about any situations we are aware that may impact your tax filing.

You should also provide your tax preparer with the following:

      • List of the dates that you were in the US vs. out of the country during the year.  
      • Details of any Housing Expenses, to be used in addition to the Approved Housing Allowance for completing Worksheet 1 of IRS Publication 517.
      • Information on any retirement plans that you may have contributed to during the year, or that you have received a distribution from during the year.
      • Names and Social Security Numbers of all family members.
      • Names and dates of any family births or deaths (children and spouses), as well as whether you were married during the year.
      • US Treasury Department regulations require that if you have any foreign bank accounts, and if the sum total of all of your foreign accounts has ever been $10,000 or more at any time during the year, you should fill out a TD-F90-22.1 Form.  Further information is available on the IRS website at www.irs.gov.
      • You may also need to complete Form 8938, which deals with foreign assets.
      • If you participated in the Healthcare Marketplace, you will need to provide your tax preparer with Form 1095-A.

New Baby

Micah James Fry was born January 16. He weighed 8 pounds 2 ounces and was 21 inches long. Micah is the son of Nathan and Hannah Fry. He joins older sister Grace, who is 3. The Frys are currently on deputation raising support for their videography ministry Lens of the Harvest.
