Faith is not just about what we believe—it’s about how we live. As you work through these devotionals, my prayer is that you will grow stronger, stand firmer, and live bolder for Christ. No matter what comes, you can remain unshaken because your foundation is in Him. – John O’Malley

1 Corinthians 4:6-8
“And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another. For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it? Now ye are full, now ye are rich, ye have reigned as kings without us: and I would to God ye did reign, that we also might reign with you.”
Learn About It
Paul rebukes the Corinthians for their spiritual arrogance. They had become “puffed up”, boasting in their own wisdom, status, and spirituality. Some saw themselves as superior because of their knowledge, while others took pride in their association with certain leaders. Paul reminds them that everything they have is a gift from God—so there is no place for boasting.
Paul asks a convicting question: “What hast thou that thou didst not receive?” This reminds us that all our abilities, knowledge, and spiritual growth come from God, not from ourselves. The Corinthians had begun to act as though they had achieved success on their own, forgetting their dependence on Christ.
In verse 8, Paul uses irony, pointing out that the Corinthians were acting as though they had already arrived at a state of spiritual greatness. He contrasts this with his own life—one of humility, service, and suffering for Christ. He wants them to see that true spiritual maturity is not about status, but about servanthood.
Apply It to Me
-
- Do I take credit for my spiritual growth, or do I recognize that all I have is from God?
- Am I more focused on my own status in the church than on serving humbly?
- Do I compare myself to others spiritually, leading to pride or discouragement?
Talk to God About It
Lord, keep me from spiritual pride. Remind me that everything I have—my abilities, my wisdom, my opportunities—is a gift from You. Help me to walk in humility, to serve rather than seek status, and to always give You the glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Act on It
This week, take a step toward humble service. Whether it’s doing something unnoticed at church, encouraging someone without seeking credit, or praying for a heart of humility, choose to reflect Christ’s example rather than seeking recognition.
