1 Corinthians 7:10-11
“And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband: But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.”
Learn About It
Paul speaks directly to married couples, emphasizing the permanence and sanctity of marriage. He reminds them that marriage is a covenant, not just a human contract. God designed it to reflect Christ’s relationship with the church, which is built on commitment, love, and faithfulness.
In this passage, Paul reinforces Jesus’ teaching that divorce should not be taken lightly. While he acknowledges that separation may sometimes happen, his instruction is that reconciliation should always be the goal. Just as Christ never abandons His church, spouses should be committed to faithfulness even in difficult times.
Marriage is a living picture of the gospel—the husband’s love for his wife should reflect Christ’s self-sacrificial love, and the wife’s role should reflect the church’s loving submission to Christ (Ephesians 5:22-25). This means marriage is not primarily about personal happiness, but about honoring God through faithfulness and selflessness.

Talk to God About It
Lord, thank You for the gift of marriage and the beautiful picture it paints of Your love for the church. Help me to love selflessly, to forgive quickly, and to remain faithful. If I am single, help me to prepare my heart for a marriage that honors You. Give me wisdom and grace in all my relationships. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

If you are married, take time this week to invest in your spouse—whether through an encouraging word, a thoughtful act, or a heartfelt prayer together. If you are single, pray for God’s guidance in preparing for a future marriage that glorifies Him.
