June 15-18 – Family Fellowship Week in Kinston, NC.

Celebrating Fifty Years

Scripture is full of illustrations where God instructed men to come together for the purpose of remembering His goodness to them, and specifically, to annually memorialize great deeds He had done. These times of remembrance were often times of gathering, celebrating, and even feasting. In 1971, God answered the desire of Pastor Wingard’s heart and enabled him to start World Wide New Testament Baptist Missions. That first year, Calvary Baptist Church in New Bern, NC, hosted what would become the first annual Family Fellowship Week. This summer, we will again gather at the 50th Annual Family Week, where we will recount God’s blessings of the past, and look forward with anticipation to His blessings for the future. Please make plans to join us at New Testament Baptist Church of Kinston, NC, from June 15-18. Full details are available online at familyfellowshipweek.com.

Microsoft Excel

We request that all users complete their financial report template using Microsoft Excel rather than Apple’s Numbers or other programs. Although Apple’s spreadsheet application does export to Excel, doing so removes many key features that our staff relies on to review the reports. Similarly, Google Docs is not structured to handle many of the formulas in the template and often creates problems with the figures. If you need to purchase a copy of Microsoft Excel for Windows or for Mac, we can obtain these for you at a discounted rate. If switching to Excel creates a hardship for you, please contact us. If you have any questions, please let us know. We appreciate your assistance in this area!

Changes in Ministry and Your Financial Report

Changes in ministry can affect the typical expenses you list on your reports from month to month. For instance, someone on deputation will primarily have travel expenses, while someone on the field may have more costs related to renting a building or purchasing snacks and Sunday School supplies. Someone coming home on furlough will be dealing with meal allowances and lodging costs they do not usually see when on the field and may be using a borrowed vehicle, which must be recorded differently from a vehicle they own. We suggest that you click here to review our checklist of commonly overlooked expenses and make sure you are claiming all allowable deductions. If you have questions about your financial reports, please contact Naomi.

Prayer Letter Services

Due to staff vacations, our prayer letter editing services will be unavailable from May 2 to May 13. Please submit your letters to [email protected] anytime before 4:00 PM EST on May 1, to be sure it is sent out in time. Letters received after this date will be edited on May 14, when our normal processing schedule will resume. Please schedule your upcoming prayer letters accordingly. Thank you for your help with this!

Birth Announcement

Benaiah William Tyndale Folkers was born on February 18. He weighed 9 pounds, 9 ounces. Benaiah is the first son of Seth and Kaitlin Folkers and joins his older sister, Atarah, who is 18 months. The Folkers minister in Cameroon, where they assist with mobile Bible College training. Pray for them as the country is in much turmoil at this time.

See the Harvest

WWNTBM has partnered with Ambassador Baptist College to lead a missions trip to Utah this summer for young people ages 16-30. We realize that many small churches do not have the resources to provide opportunities for their youth to see missions first hand. If you know of someone who would benefit from this trip, please direct them to our website at seetheharvest.com.

From the Memo Board: February 2020

Dates to Know

February 17 – You should receive an email with the new 2020 MFR Template, including the new mileage rates.

February 17 – All U.S. Banks will be closed in honor of Presidents’ Day

February 24 – Bank transfers may be limited as our bank will be performing website maintenance procedures

March 1 – January Financial Reports will be due.

April 1 – February Financial Reports will be due.

June 15-18 – Family Fellowship Week in Kinston, NC.

Benefits of Financial Reports

The Monthly Financial Report (MFR) is the tool that missionaries can use to become accountable to WWNTBM for their reimbursable expenses, rather than having all funds listed as personal earnings. Over the course of 2019, 81% of those eligible chose to submit MFRs. By doing so, they were able to reduce their 1099 Personal Earnings by a combined average of 33.63%. If you are not currently utilizing MFRs and would like information about how to begin, please contact our office.

Financial Status Report

We have uploaded a Financial Status Report to your SecureCloud account, showing figures for the fourth quarter of 2019. This is meant to show you the financial details that we have on file, such as your support estimate and the average amount of support you received this past quarter. This is the information we provide to pastors who may call about your ministry. We ask that all missionaries update their support estimate once every four years, or as their lives and ministries change. Please review this information and contact us if you have any questions.

Retirement Accounts

As self-employed individuals missionaries have available to you and/or your spouse these Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA) options:

1. Traditional IRA
2. Roth IRA
3. SEP-IRA
4. SIMPLE IRA
5. Solo 401(k)

You are also able to open an account with any investment firm of your choice.

Click here to read an article that helps in understanding the benefits of each account.

Another helpful article from Dave Ramsey is available by clicking here.

You may want to speak with someone about your retirement options. David O’Malley, Bro. O’Malley’s brother, is an advisor for Edward Jones. He has offered to assist our missionaries in any way, even if they are not a client of his. His offer is a no-cost unbiased consultation. His phone number is 561-833-9123.

Most investment firms offer the above IRA options to independent contractors. (Independent Contractor is the term the IRS uses to describe your relationship to WW as a self-employed missionary.) You will need to discuss your options with the firm. The investment firm will have specific instructions for you once you make the choice of what type of account you want. When you have opened your account, you can contact Kim O’Malley and she will be happy to send your monthly contribution in for you.

Speaking with an investment advisor and/or your CPA can help you in choosing the best plan for you and your family. There are more options available to you than ever before. Please do not delay. Adding retirement investing to your monthly budget means preparing for your family’s future. Kim O’Malley is now a certified Master Financial Coach and is available to assist our missionaries with this topic.

Registering Your Ministry

If your ministry has been chartered and established as a non-profit organization, we recommend getting a bank account in its name and then going through the process of registering it as a Foreign Non-Profit Organization with our CPA. This process takes several months and costs around $400. The purpose is to show that your ministry meets IRS standards to be considered a public rather than a private charity. With this status, funds for purchases such as land may be able to be sent directly to your ministry, thus eliminating your personal tax liability. Please note that there are limitations to this option. If you are planning to raise funds for the purchase of land or buildings, it would be advantageous to have this step in place before funds arrive in our office for such a project. Please contact our office for more information.

SecureCloud Packets

At the end of each month, we scan any mail that has come to the Office and place it in your SecureCloud folder. This would include check stubs for all bills paid by the office, as well as any cards or correspondence from donors. Please be sure to check SecureCloud periodically, especially once you receive the notice that December packets have been uploaded, as many missionaries have received Christmas cards and letters which are available to you there.

January Income Totals

During a typical month, we close the books on the 25th, and any checks received after that date are posted to the following month. Due to receipting requirements, we cannot do this in the month of December. As a result, please be aware that your December support total may be higher than normal, while your January support total may be lower than normal. Please be sure to plan ahead for this!

Housing Allowances for 2020

Housing allowances previously in place have automatically rolled over to the new year. Missionaries who are ordained are eligible to have a housing allowance in place, which can provide certain tax benefits. If you did not have a housing allowance in 2019 and would like to have one for 2020, or if you have questions regarding this, please contact our office.

New Excel Template

A new Excel template for the year 2020 will be available during the second week of February. This will give us time to review the need for any possible updates. January financial reports will be due on March 1. Should you wish to complete your report before the new template is available, you are welcome to submit it on the 2019 template.

New Mileage Rate

Beginning on January 1st, the IRS mileage rate has decreased to $0.575 per mile for business/ministry miles. This change will be reflected in the new Excel template for 2020.

Fellowship

“Fellowship” can be defined as “friendly association, especially with people who share one’s interests; a group of people meeting to pursue a shared interest or aim.” It has been said that fellowship, as described in the Bible, is coming together with other people. Good fellowship is when, as a result of coming together, there is an interchange of encouragement. Such fellowship is the goal of our annual meeting! Please make plans to join us in Kinston, North Carolina, from June 15-18.

Update on John O’Malley

We are grateful for the outpouring of love and concern that has been shown for Bro. O’Malley during his recovery from heart surgery. Many continue to ask about his welfare. He is continuing physical therapy and is on track to finish early on January 31. He is slowly regaining strength. Please click here to read his latest newsletter.

Wedding Bells!!

Congratulations to Colton and Melodie Lee, who were married on November 23rd! Colton has served as a furlough replacement for several of our missionaries. When not on the mission field, the couple travels in evangelism. Pray for them as they begin their new life together.

Celebrating Ninety Years!

Congratulations to Clyde Eborn, who will celebrate his 90th Birthday on January 26th. Bro. Eborn is one of the founders of WWNTBM and continues to serve on our Board of Reference. He and his wife Shelby were instrumental in starting the Grace Baptist Church of Newport in 1962, which he continues to pastor. The ministry grew to include a Christian school in 1970, and a radio station in 1988, which now reaches over 230 countries through its Fundamental Broadcasting Network. We are grateful to Bro. Eborn for his influence on World Wide through the years. Greetings may be sent to him at [email protected], or c/o Grace Baptist Church, 520 Roberts Road, Newport, NC 28570.

Registering to Vote

The year 2020 will again hold many important elections. While we know the outcome is truly in the Lord’s hands, we encourage all missionaries to take advantage of the freedoms we have in the United States to vote in local and federal elections. We have gathered information on early and absentee voting. Click here to learn more.

Family Reunion Time

“A family reunion is an occasion when many members of an extended family congregate. Sometimes reunions are held regularly, for example on the same date of every year. A typical family reunion will assemble for a meal, some recreation and discussion. It is also not uncommon for regular family reunions to be sponsored by family organizations.” – Wikipedia

Family Fellowship Week matches the above definition of a reunion! We hope you are making plans to join us for this annual event, which begins on the third Monday of June each year. Come experience the joy of uniting with fellow missionaries from around the world. Taste the delicious cooking provided by the New Testament Baptist Church family. Relax in an atmosphere surrounded by those who *get* what it means to face ministry away from family and friends. Soak up the times of fellowship. Share prayer requests and testimonies of God’s goodness. Learn from the older generations. Encourage the younger generations. Celebrate with us the beginning of our 50th year of ministry. Don’t miss this exciting week, to be held June 15-18 in Kinston, NC!

Financial Report Reminder

As we enter the last quarter of the year, thoughts turn to year-end tax procedures. Many people begin thinking of last-minute deductions that will affect them. If you anticipate making large ministry purchases and you desire the purchase to be a deduction in the year 2019, you may wish to make the purchase by the end of November. Because of the way our 1099s are calculated, December expenses are “reimbursed” out of January income, so the tax benefit on your 1099 would actually be considered a 2020 reimbursement. Regardless of when the purchase is made, you will still receive a tax benefit. However, we wanted you to be aware of these deadlines as you plan your expenses over the next few months.

Please keep in mind the due dates for financial reports. With the holidays approaching it is easy to let these slip past, but our CPA has encouraged us we need to keep to the due dates, per IRS regulations. The best situation is for you to report all ministry expenses through WW, thus providing the fullest tax benefit. With the change to 1099s this year, if you do not submit a MFR on time, you can still submit it on your personal taxes on a Schedule C. If you are not currently submitting financial reports we suggest you consider this option. If you have questions about this, please contact Naomi Torberson.

Lodging Suggestion

Looking for an alternative to a hotel? Check out Airbnb.com. Depending on the location and length of time, this may be cheaper than a hotel, and can include benefits such as a fully-equipped kitchen.

Our Bank has Changed!

We are now using Home Trust, a local bank that will enable us to better serve our missions family. Please be aware of the following items as we make this transition.

  • In order to have next-day funds available in a US Bank, our office must receive the request by 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Requests received after that will take two business days to show in your US bank.
  • We will not be making banking transfers during the week of September 3-6, to ensure there are no issues during the transition.
  • Starting on September 9, please be aware that transfers from WWNTBM may appear somewhat differently on your statements.

Identity Protection

Risks of identity theft continue to rise. Awareness of how your information is stored and used is key to protecting yourself. World Wide strives to protect the information you entrust to us. Here are ways you can further protect yourself.

    • Click this link to watch an Identity Theft Prevention video from our bank.
    • Do not send sensitive information (account numbers, balances, or financial requests) to anyone via email.
    • Utilize our Signal Private Messenger app to request transfers to your account, or call our main office number at 704-730-1440 to speak with us directly. If you do not have Signal and need to contact us after hours, you may call the main number and leave a voicemail.
    • Utilize our SecureCloud file transfer system to share documents with sensitive information.
    • Note: Monthly Financial Reports typically do not contain sensitive information such as account numbers. For submitting those reports, please use the email address [email protected] instead of SecureCloud.

    Trip Insurance

We recently heard of a situation where a missionary traveling on a short-term trip needed to be evacuated to the US for medical needs. The process was lengthy and expensive! If you are traveling internationally, you may wish to consider trip insurance. Some credit card companies offer policies for trips purchased with their card. Most airlines offer options at the time of purchasing tickets. Our staff has also used Seven Corners Insurance. They cover overseas medical care in addition to trip cancellation or evacuation needs. They will also provide medical insurance for those coming to the US for short periods of time if the individual’s overseas insurance does not cover US needs.

    Birth Announcement!

Hudson Michael McKinney was born on August 15. He weighed 7 pounds 10 ounces and was 21 inches long. Hudson is the third son of Jacob and Shera McKinney and joins his brothers Ryland (6) and Landon (4). The McKinneys are finishing their deputation and hope to leave for their first term in Bolivia early in 2020.

Celebrating 50 Years

In 1971, God brought to fulfillment the dream He had planted in Bill Wingard’s heart to start a missions agency. That same year, Calvary Baptist Church of New Bern hosted the first annual Family Fellowship Week. While the faces have changed through the years, what has not changed is the focus on encouragement and fellowship during the meeting. Click here to see what others have said about attending Family Week. June 15-28, 2020, New Testament Baptist Church of Kinston will co-host the 50th Annual meeting along with Calvary of New Bern. New Missionary

Rebekah Joy Childers has recently partnered with WWNTBM. She is sent out of the North Love Baptist Church in Rockford, IL, with Pastor Paul Kingsbury. Joy is a graduate of Ambassador Baptist College. In 2012 she served as an associate with us during a summer internship with Mike and Sue Smith in Colorado. She will be serving in Grenada, helping her brother and his family start a Christian school. Pray for her as she begins deputation.

Congratulations!

Kim O’Malley recently completed her Financial Coach Master Training through Dave Ramsey. This has been a long term goal of hers, and we are thrilled to recognize her achievement. Her desire is to use this training to further assist our missionaries in the area of financial planning.

50th Anniversary Family Week

Now is the time to begin planning to attend next year’s Family Fellowship Week. We will meet on June 15-18, 2020, with Pastor Tim Daniel and the New Testament Baptist Church of Kinston, NC. If you are planning a furlough in 2020, please be sure to arrange your schedule so you can attend this meeting in its entirety. It will begin with dinner on Monday evening and end with the Thursday evening service. Most attendees plan to depart Friday morning. This will mark our 50th Family Week! In recognition of this, the Thursday evening service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church in New Bern, with our founder and chairman, Pastor Bill Wingard. Don’t miss this exciting week! It is truly the highlight of the WWNTBM year.

Office Update

At Family Week, John O’Malley gave an update on what is happening in the Office. This is a transitional year. Thank you for bearing with us as we make changes related to two key areas.

The first key area is the change from W-2 Employees to 1099 Independent Contractors.

  • We collected Form I-9 from all missionaries who were with us prior to January 1, to cover our bases under employee records that need to be maintained for 3 years.
  • In January, we issued our final W-2s.
  • This year we are collecting Form W-9 (or W-8BEN) from all individuals, to set us up with the new Independent Contractor status.
  • In January 2020, individuals will receive a 1099. This will mean two main changes for personal tax filings. First, the form on which you receive the info. (The figures themselves will not change.) Second, the ability under new tax laws to personally list on Schedule C what may not fall under our accountable plan.

The second key area is related to sending funds to charities. We are working with over 15 missionaries who have foreign charities, to register them with our CPA.

Key thought for those on deputation: Ministry tax situations will likely be different from what you have dealt with before. Take time to understand how your ministry will affect your taxes before you leave for the field. Find a good tax advisor familiar with missionaries and those living overseas. Our staff can help.

New Missionary

We are pleased to welcome Jackie and Brittany Elwart to the World Wide family. Bro. Jackie has served as the assistant pastor to Tim Daniel at the New Testament Baptist Church in Kinston since 2012. His wife, Brittany, has also served as the church secretary at New Testament. They are preparing to begin deputation in September to plant a church in Big Bear, California. The Elwarts have three daughters: Charlotte (12), Audrey (10), and Sadie (8). Pray for them as they sell their home in NC and begin deputation.

New Baby

Valiana Faith Jenney was born on May 1. She weighed 8 pounds 4 ounces and was 20 inches long. Valiana is the first daughter of Stephen and Charity Jenney, who are church planters in California. The Jenneys have three boys: Judson (4), Samuel (3), and Noah (2). Pray for them as they have just begun holding services for their new church.

New Engagement

Colton Lee and Melodie Bloyer are engaged to be married in November. Colton does short-term evangelistic missions trips several times a year to different locations. He recently served as furlough replacement for Michael & Nora Deatrick in the Solomon Islands, and will soon travel to Yap to replace Paul & Sherry Zimmer for three months. Pray for this couple as they prepare to be married and make plans for their future together!

50th Anniversary Celebration!

Danny and Darleen Whetstone will celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary on June 7th. The Whetstones met when they were eight and nine years old in Panacea, FL. The Lord has blessed them with four children, 16 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. The Whetstones served together in pastorates in Greenville, SC, and Greeneville, TN, before being called into missionary service. They minister in missions conferences and revivals, as well as make visits to missionaries around the world. This year, they have moved back into a travel trailer, as they spend some 330 days of the year on the road. If you would like to send congratulations to them you may do so by email to [email protected].

Summer Intern

Lauren Boyer spent a week with us in May, completing a portion of her internship requirements for Ambassador Baptist College. One of the ministries our staff enjoys being a part of is training students for whatever the Lord has called them to do, whether on the mission field or in a ministry office. Please pray for Lauren as she serves the Lord at the Wilds Christian Camp this summer and returns to finish her education at ABC this fall.
