In His Service

For four decades, Bro. Danny Whetstone wrote articles to missionaries offering practical advice, biblical principles, and spiritual encouragement. Those articles first appeared here in the Headquarter Happenings newsletters as he sought to uplift, strengthen, and guide our missions family. WWNTBM has recently collected 153 of these articles and published them in a book titled In His Service. The title is taken from the way he would close his letters and articles. The book was presented to the Whetstones at Family Week. This book is available on Amazon in both print and Kindle versions.

Why We Use the KJV

During Family Week 2022, in response to questions from the missions family, the Executive Board requested that FFW 2023 include sessions on why we as a mission agency use the King James Version. Frank Camp was asked to speak on the topic. Following is a brief outline of his sessions. Additional material, including recordings of these sessions, is available in SecureCloud under the folder, KJV Documentation.

When choosing your version of the Bible, you will either accept the research of men, or you will accept by faith what the Bible says about itself. We use the KJV for the following reasons:

      1. The manuscripts that support the KJV
        • The quantity of manuscripts
        • The quality of manuscripts
        • The “questionable” manuscripts referred to by critics are questionable only because the critics claim them to be.
      2. The men who translated the KJV
        • Used faithful methods
        • Did not use fraudulent methods
        • Had character
        • Had credentials – many were native Greek speakers
      3. The methods used by the translators
      4. The mastery of the translation
        • Conservative theology
        • Conviction that comes when it is read
        • Continuous time it has been in use
      5. The modern version confusion
      6. The matter of preservation

News from the IRS

When governments shut down in early 2020 due to Covid, millions of individuals were affected as they tried to file their 2019 taxes. Complications since then have continued to delay the processing of returns for both 2019 and 2020 tax years. The IRS has recently issued guidance for those who have not yet received their expected refund for tax year 2019. Please click here for more information, and contact your tax preparer if you have questions.

Updated Policy on Designated Funds

The Executive Board adopted the following policy for handling designated funds. They recognized you faced hardship and a challenge when designated gifts arrived at the missions agency, which were unsolicited and unexpected.

Here is the new policy for handling designated funds:

      • Unsolicited Designated Funds: When a donor sends a designated unsolicited gift, we will process the gift as a regular gift. We will process the gift as unrestricted funds.
      • Solicited Designated Funds: We will follow donor intent when a missionary solicits funds for a project. All solicited projects need to be approved by the Executive Board. This agency has complete control of the donated funds and discretion regarding their use.

Reminders:

      • We will make you aware of designations in the memo field of your support list.
      • We can only accept designated funds for WWNTBM missionaries.
      • We cannot receive funds designated as “national support” or funds designated as gifts for adult children of our missionaries (age 18 and older).

Tax Filing Information

The deadline this year to file taxes for most taxpayers is Tuesday, April 18. If you have not yet contacted your tax preparer about filing your taxes, you need to do so as soon as possible. Failure to file on time, even if you are unable to pay on time, can result in additional penalties and interest. Individuals can receive an extension of the filing deadline, but please note that if taxes are owed, interest on those payments will begin as of April 18 even if you are not required to file until later in the year. All missionaries with WWNTBM are responsible to file their own taxes. If the office can assist in providing paperwork to your preparer on your behalf, please let us know.

Financial Status Report

We will upload a Financial Status Report to your SecureCloud account in coming days, showing figures for the first quarter of 2023. This is meant to show you the financial details that we have on file, such as your support estimate and the average amount of support you received this past quarter. This is information we provide to pastors who may call about your ministry. We ask that all missionaries update their support estimate once every four years, or as their lives and ministries change. Please review this information and contact us if you have any questions.

Changes in Ministry and your Financial Reports

Changes in ministry can affect the typical expenses you list on your reports from month to month. For instance, someone on deputation will primarily have travel expenses, while someone on the field may have more costs related to renting a building or purchasing nursery snacks and Sunday School supplies. Someone coming home on furlough will be dealing with meal allowances and lodging costs they don’t usually see when on the field, and may be using a borrowed vehicle, which must be recorded differently from a vehicle they own. We suggest that you click here to review our checklist of commonly overlooked expenses, to be sure you are claiming all allowable deductions. If you have questions about your financial reports, please contact our office.

Family Fellowship Week

Family Fellowship Week is about three things. It is about gathering as a Missions family. It is about fellowship with God’s choice servants. It is about continuing to do what brought us this far as a missions agency. Our theme for Family Fellowship Week 2023 is Hope! God reminds us in Scripture of our hope in Him, the Gospel, the Faith, and His return.

Please pray with us that those attending will be encouraged and strengthened to continue in their ministries during this week.

New Missionaries!

Morgan Dickens was recently approved as an associate missionary with World Wide. Morgan is the son of our missionaries Joel and Cynthia Dickens, and has grown up on the field of Brazil. Morgan is sent out of the Roanoke Island Baptist Church of Manteo, NC, with Pastor Scott Baxley. His desire is to assist another missionary in Brazil to establish a ministry training facility. He will work in this new training center for two years as he seeks God’s will for his future.

Cody Carden was recently approved as an associate missionary with World Wide. Cody is a missions student at Ambassador Baptist College. He is from the McLeansville Baptist Church in McLeansville, NC, with Pastor Michael Barnette. Cody is completing his college internship with WWNTBM this summer, and will be assisting in our See The Harvest trip to Scotland, as well as traveling with Bro. O’Malley to meetings in the US and Mexico.

New Excel Templates for Financial Reports

A new Excel template for the year 2023 will be available on February 15. This will give us time to review the need for any possible updates. January financial reports for US Missionaries will be due on March 1. Should you wish to complete your January report before the new template is available, you are welcome to submit it on the 2022 template. However, starting with the February report please be sure to use the new template.

Financial Status Report

We have uploaded a Financial Status Report to your SecureCloud account showing figures for the fourth quarter of 2022. This is meant to show you the financial details that we have on file, such as your support estimate and the average amount of support you received this past quarter. This is the information we provide to pastors who may call about your ministry. We ask that all missionaries update their support estimate once every four years, or as their lives and ministries change. Please review this information and contact us if you have any questions.

Benefits of Financial Reports for US Citizens

The Monthly Financial Report (MFR) is the tool that US Citizen Missionaries can use to become accountable to WWNTBM for their reimbursable expenses, rather than having all funds listed as personal earnings. Over the course of 2022, 77% of those eligible chose to submit MFRs. By doing so, they were able to reduce their 1099 Personal Earnings by a combined average of 21.77%. If you are not currently utilizing MFRs and would like information about how to begin, please contact our office.

IRS Information For the 2023 Tax Season

The IRS has issued several notices about this year’s tax season. Several changes in particular this year affect the Child Tax Credit (CTC), Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), and the Child and Dependent Care Credit. It is possible many tax preparers will receive a significantly smaller refund this year, as these credits return to pre-Covid levels. Please click here to view the information from the IRS.

We encourage all missionaries who are subject to US Taxes to contact your tax preparer and begin the filing process as soon as possible.

Preparing and Filing Taxes for US Missionaries

Please note that, while our Office Staff is familiar with many of the IRS regulations that affect missionaries, we are not authorities on the subject. We will attempt to assist our missionaries in any way possible; however, questions which are beyond the scope of your missions status are best directed to a tax professional.

We will provide you with the following information at the end of January. Please watch for emails in coming days with details on how and when this will be distributed. You may wish to submit this to your tax preparer:

• A copy of your 1099
• A year-to-date Summary of the MFR information that you have submitted to the Office. This can be especially helpful if you have completed Categories 17-22, as many of those categories can affect your personal taxes. This will show your Personal Earnings Calculations for the year, as well as Housing Allowance information and details of Estimate Taxes we may have submitted for you during the year. There may also be notices on this document specifically for you and your tax preparer about any situations we are aware that may impact your tax filing.

You should also provide your tax preparer with the following:

• List of the dates that you were in the US vs. out of the country during the year.
• Details of any Housing Expenses, to be used in addition to the Approved Housing Allowance for completing Worksheet 1 of IRS Publication 517.
• Information on any retirement plans that you may have contributed to during the year, or that you have received a distribution from during the year.
• Names and Social Security Numbers of all family members.
• Names and dates of any family births or deaths (children and spouses), as well as whether you were married during the year.
• US Treasury Department regulations require that if you have any foreign bank accounts, and if the sum total of all of your foreign accounts has ever been $10,000 or more at any time during the year, you should fill out a TD-F90-22.1 Form. Further information is available on the IRS website at www.irs.gov.
• You may also need to complete Form 8938, which deals with foreign assets.
• If you participated in the Healthcare Marketplace, you will need to provide your tax preparer with Form 1095-A.

We are excited to announce that we have a new logo available for use for your prayer cards and presentations. The digital files in several variations are available on SecureCloud under Files Shared With You in the folder named WW Logo for Prayer Cards and Presentations.

Please be sure to check SecureCloud periodically, especially once you receive the notice that December packets have been uploaded, as many missionaries have received Christmas cards and letters which are available to you there.

January Income Totals

During a typical month, we close the books on the 25th, and any checks received after that date are posted to the following month. December 1 – November Financial Reports will be due for Non-Resident Missionaries. This includes FNPO Reports for those with Foreign Non-Profit Organizations.

December 1 – October Financial Reports will be due for US Missionaries. This includes FNPO Reports for those with Foreign Non-Profit Organizations.

December 5 – Those who normally receive funds on the 5th will receive their deposit(s) as usual.

December 5 – All prayer letters the Office assists in mailing via Prayerletters.com should be submitted to our staff in order for your recipients to get them before Christmas.

December 10 – Those who normally receive funds on the 10th will receive their deposit(s) as usual.

December 15 – Missionaries on an R-1 Visa will receive their deposit(s) as usual.

December 15 – Please contact us by this date via Signal if you will need funds in your account before Christmas or if you will need a deposit between Christmas and the end of the year. This allows us time to schedule your deposit around bank holidays and the office being closed.

December 20 – All prayer letters the Office assists in sending via Mailchimp should be submitted to our staff in order for your recipients to get them before Christmas.

December 22-28 – The office will be closed in celebration of Christmas.

January 1 – November Financial Reports will be due for US Missionaries. This includes FNPO Reports for those with Foreign Non-Profit Organizations.

January 1 – December Financial Reports will be due for Non-Resident Missionaries. This includes FNPO Reports for those with Foreign Non-Profit Organizations.

January 10 – All Missionaries will receive their statements of December Support Received.

January 12 – All missionaries (except those on an R-1 Visa) will receive their final December support on this day, regardless of the day they normally receive support.

January 15 – Missionaries on an R-1 Visa will receive their deposit(s) as usual.

January 15 – December Financial Reports will be due for US Missionaries, along with any remaining receipts or financial paperwork for 2022. This includes FNPO Reports for those with Foreign Non-Profit Organizations.

January 29 – Those who normally receive funds on the 29th will receive their deposit(s) as usual.

February 1 – 1099 Forms and other tax documentation for the 2022 tax year will be available on Secure Cloud.

February 5 – Those who normally receive funds on the 5th will receive their deposit(s) as usual.

Special Support Dates

Due to the holidays, and to allow sufficient time for year-end contributions and necessary tax procedures, coming support days will be adjusted. We have taken proactive steps to assist you, should you have a need. Please note that all regular deposit dates after December 15 will be adjusted. Please refer to the dates above for special support dates.

Please note that during a typical month, we close the books on the 25th, and any checks received after that date are posted to the following month. This gives us several days to process month-end items in preparation for a 29th or 5th Deposit. However, due to year-end receipting requirements, we cannot do this in the month of December. We are unable to close the books for December until January 10, to allow time for donations postmarked in 2022 to arrive in our office. As a result, we do not have final December income totals until January, and without those totals, we are unable to make the regular support deposits for December 29, January 5, or January 10. Therefore, all missionaries (except those on an R-1 visa) will receive their final December support on January 12, regardless of what day they normally receive funds. This deposit will likely be higher than normal. However, this means that deposits at the end of January will likely be lower than normal. Please be sure to plan ahead for this!

Upcoming Financial Reports for US Missionaries

Please prepare now to ensure that your year-end financial reports are submitted on time. October reports are due December 1, November reports are due January 1, and December reports are due January 15. If it is possible for you to submit reports before the due dates, that would greatly assist our staff. Please note, it is fine to submit a report without waiting for the Line 1 income figure. We can add that for you as needed. Reports should be submitted to [email protected]. Please be sure to include all receipts for expenses $75 and over at the same time you submit your report so there are no delays in processing. Thank you for your help in these areas.

New Missionaries

We are pleased to welcome Ron and Loretta Jones to the World Wide family. The Joneses are members of the Gospel Independent Baptist Church in Oxford, NC, with Pastor Robert Greene. After pastoring for many years, the Lord led them into missions. They have assisted national pastors in India for over 25 years. They are nearing retirement, and continue to travel throughout the US promoting missions in India as their health permits.

Year-End Prayer Letter Services

If the office assists in mailing your prayer letters through PrayerLetters.com, please send us your information by December 5th for your recipients to receive it before Christmas.

If we assist with your MailChimp emails only, please get us your information by December 20th in order for your recipients to receive them by the end of the year. Please be aware that letters received in our office after these days may experience delays due to the holidays. Please plan the timing of your letters accordingly, and contact the office if you have any questions. Thank you!

Our Office will resume processing prayer letters on January 2, 2023.

Our Privacy Policy

WWNTBM is committed to securing the privacy of all individuals associated with our agency. Therefore, we have a privacy policy to guide our staff and to inform our missionaries concerning how information is shared. A copy of this policy is available on SecureCloud under the Security Protocols folder. If you have questions or concerns about your privacy, please contact our office.

Financial Report Reminder

As we enter the last quarter of the year, thoughts turn to year-end tax procedures. Many people begin thinking of last-minute deductions that will affect them. If you anticipate making large ministry purchases and you desire the purchase to be a deduction in the year 2022, you may wish to make the purchase by the end of November. Because of the way our 1099s are calculated, December expenses are “reimbursed” out of January income, so the tax benefit on your 1099 would actually be considered a 2023 reimbursement. Regardless of when the purchase is made, you will still receive a tax benefit. However, we wanted you to be aware of these deadlines as you plan your expenses over the next few months.

Please continue to send all prayer letter-related correspondence to us at [email protected].  You should receive an automated reply indicating that we have received your email.  Our goal is to handle your letters promptly and efficiently.  If you do not receive the automated reply please feel free to reach out to us by phone or Signal message.

Bro. Chris Beane has stepped away to focus more on preparation for his full-time deputation, which he hopes to begin early next year.  We are grateful for his assistance over the past year.

Missions Support And The Local Church

Our staff has compiled a document that we believe is beneficial to churches and missionaries alike. This is a compilation of recommendations on missions finances, based on over fifty years of assisting with processing missions support funds.  In addition to practical observations, our staff has spent much time researching legal and financial guidelines from many government agencies, as well as with our team of financial advisors and tax lawyers.  Click here to download the document. This is also available on the giving page of our website.  Feel free to recommend this to churches you come in contact with.

Academic Opportunity

Our friends at Bearing Precious Seed and First Baptist of Milford, OH, want to bless our missions family. Their Biblical School of World Evangelism is offering a free course audit this fall of Articulatory Phonetics or Bible Doctrines. They sent this video for you to see. Please take advantage of this academic opportunity. Click here to view.
You may contact them at [email protected] for more information.
